What does it mean?

B1426 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Side impact sensor (RH) system for fault 1 .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on continuously with the side restraint system disabled
  • Right side airbag and curtain will not deploy in a side collision
  • The fault stays current after clearing and often reappears within one ignition cycle
  • May follow interior trim work, seat removal or water ingress into the cabin
  • No mechanical or driving symptom to accompany the lamp

Likely causes

  • Internal failure of the sensor's sensing element or electronics
  • Water intrusion at the B pillar or sill reaching the sensor and its connector
  • Sensor loose on its mounting, so it cannot read body deceleration correctly
  • Sensor previously exposed to an impact or salvaged from a crashed vehicle
  • High resistance or corroded terminals in the sensor connector under the trim
  • Damaged supply or communication wiring between the module and the sensor
  • Low battery voltage during the self test causing the sensor to report a fault

How to fix it

  1. Switch off the ignition, disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve discharge period before working on the system
  2. Test the battery and alternator output, because marginal voltage produces false sensor fault reports
  3. Remove the B pillar or sill trim and check for damp insulation, water staining or a corroded connector, repairing any leak found
  4. Unplug the sensor and inspect both connector halves for green pins, deformed terminals and a lock that has not engaged
  5. Measure the supply and signal wiring back to the restraint module for continuity and insulation to ground
  6. Confirm the sensor is torqued down to clean bare metal and that its bracket is not bent or cracked
  7. Fit a correct new sensor rather than a used unit, perform any required configuration, then clear the memory and confirm the lamp goes out
