What does it mean?
B1489 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: PODS (Passenger Occupant Detecting System) ECU Defect .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp stays on continuously
- Passenger airbag ON/OFF indicator stuck in one state or flashing
- Front passenger airbag disabled even with an adult occupying the seat
- Passenger seat belt reminder behaves incorrectly
- Code returns immediately after being cleared
Likely causes
- Internal failure of the PODS (Passenger Occupant Detecting System) control module, including corrupted memory or calibration data
- Zero calibration never performed after the seat, seat cushion or module was replaced or removed
- Weak power feed or ground to the module — corroded under-seat connector or loose ground bolt
- Seat harness pinched or chafed where it flexes through the full seat travel
- Corrosion from spilled liquid or a body leak under the passenger seat
- Low system voltage from a weak battery, which makes the module report itself unreliable
- Loss of communication between the occupant detection module and the airbag control module
How to fix it
- Read all airbag codes and freeze frame data first and note any companion occupant detection or seat codes
- Open the under-seat connector and inspect for spread terminals, corrosion and a lock that is not fully seated
- Slide the seat fully forward and back while inspecting the harness for pinch and chafe points
- Measure module supply and ground with a multimeter under load, not just with the key on
- Check battery state of charge and charging voltage; a weak battery alone can set this code
- Perform the occupant classification zero calibration with the seat empty
- Replace the module and recalibrate only after wiring, ground and calibration have been ruled out
