What does it mean?
B1523 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Buckle Switch Passenger short or short to Battery .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp on
- Passenger belt reminder reads as belted at all times, so it never chimes
- Belt status in scan data does not respond when the buckle is used
- Passenger occupant and belt related indicators behaving inconsistently
- Hard code that reappears immediately after clearing
Likely causes
- Passenger seat harness chafed against a powered lead such as a seat heater, seat motor or occupant sensing feed
- Aftermarket accessory or seat heater kit spliced into the passenger seat loom
- Terminal pushed out of the under-seat connector and contacting a live pin
- Corrosion in the connector from a spilled drink or a leaking door or screen seal wetting the carpet
- Damaged insulation where the harness passes the seat frame after seat removal
- Internal short inside the passenger buckle assembly
How to fix it
- Confirm the fault with live data: latch and release the passenger belt and watch for any change of state
- Unplug the passenger buckle and measure the harness side for voltage present with the ignition on
- Inspect the passenger seat loom for aftermarket splices and disconnect any accessory wiring for a retest
- Check the under-seat connector for water damage, corrosion and terminals touching adjacent live pins
- Trace the harness for chafed or melted insulation where it crosses powered leads and the seat frame
- Repair the harness with correct terminals and reroute it away from supply wiring
- Replace the passenger buckle assembly if the short is inside the component, then clear and verify
