What does it mean?
B1981 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Control 1 Circuit High .
Symptoms
- Latch does not operate on command, the gate stays as it is
- Powered close or release aborts and the warning chime sounds
- Ajar indication incorrect on the instrument cluster
- Latch occasionally works, then the fault returns and disables it
- Other liftgate functions still work, showing the problem is limited to this output
Likely causes
- Control wire chafed against a permanent or switched battery feed inside the gate loom
- Water bridging a power pin and the control pin inside the latch connector
- Open ground or return leg for the latch actuator, leaving the output floating high
- Terminal fitted into the wrong cavity after a connector repair
- Internal fault in the latch actuator that connects the control line to its own feed
- Output driver in the liftgate control module failing to pull the circuit down
- Aftermarket wiring spliced into the latch circuit
How to fix it
- Check the state of the latch control output in live data with the ignition on and the gate closed
- Disconnect the latch and measure the control wire for battery voltage, any voltage present with the module unplugged proves an external short
- Verify the actuator return or ground path with a voltage drop test during an operation attempt
- Measure the actuator resistance to rule out an internal fault linking control to feed
- Inspect the loom in the gate boot for chafe against feed wires and check the connector for water and mis inserted terminals
- Remove any accessory splices from the latch circuit and retest
- Repair the circuit, replace the latch if it is internally faulty, then clear the code and confirm several full cycles
