What does it mean?
B1984 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Control 2 Circuit Low .
Symptoms
- One direction of the latch, typically cinch or release, does not work while the other still does
- Gate closes but does not pull fully shut, or opens only with the manual handle
- Ajar warning remains on and the interior lamps stay lit
- Chime sounds each time a gate command is given
- Fault often coincides with damp weather or a car wash
Likely causes
- Control wire shorted to ground in the liftgate boot or where the loom passes a sharp body edge
- Moisture in the latch connector giving a leakage path to the housing and body
- Shorted actuator winding on the second control leg
- Connector terminal displaced and touching the shield or a mounting bracket
- Loom damaged by cargo, a fitted towbar harness or a previous rear end repair
- Low side driver in the liftgate module shorted internally
- Poor latch ground creating misleading voltage readings on the control line
How to fix it
- Compare latch control 1 and latch control 2 behaviour in live data while commanding the outputs
- Disconnect the latch and see whether the second output returns to normal, which separates actuator from wiring
- With both ends disconnected, measure the control 2 wire to ground and wiggle the boot harness to catch an intermittent short
- Check the winding resistance of the second actuator circuit against the first one
- Inspect the latch connector for water and corrosion and dry it thoroughly before retesting
- Repair the shorted wire or replace the latch assembly when the winding is at fault
- Clear the code and confirm both latch directions work over several complete gate cycles
