What does it mean?
B1985 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Control 2 Circuit High .
Symptoms
- Cinch or release function dead in one direction while the other still operates
- Gate does not seal fully, leaving an ajar warning and interior lamps on
- Warning chime sounds when the gate is commanded
- Powered operation locked out after a couple of failed attempts
- Fault stays present even in dry conditions when a hard short is involved
Likely causes
- Control wire rubbed through onto a battery feed inside the liftgate loom
- Water in the latch connector linking a power terminal to the control 2 terminal
- Open ground or return leg for that half of the latch actuator
- Terminal placed in the wrong cavity during a connector repair
- Internal actuator fault connecting the second control leg to its supply
- Module output unable to pull the circuit down because the driver has failed
- Accessory wiring tapped into the latch circuit
How to fix it
- Watch the latch control 2 output state in live data while commanding the latch
- Unplug the latch and check the control wire for battery voltage with the module also disconnected, voltage present means an external short
- Test the return path of the actuator with a voltage drop measurement during operation
- Measure the second actuator winding and compare it with the first circuit
- Inspect the loom in the gate boot for chafe against feed wires, and check the connector for moisture and mis inserted terminals
- Remove aftermarket splices from the latch wiring
- Repair the wiring or renew the latch assembly, then clear the code and verify both latch directions over several cycles
