What does it mean?

B1986 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Control 2 Circuit Open .

Symptoms

  • One latch direction does nothing, with no click or motor noise
  • Gate has to be pulled shut or opened by hand
  • Ajar warning does not clear, or the gate reports open while closed
  • Powered operation disabled with a warning chime
  • Complaint often starts right after rear body, glass or trim work

Likely causes

  • Latch connector left unplugged or not fully seated after service
  • Broken conductor in the flexing section of the liftgate harness
  • Open winding on the second actuator circuit
  • Corroded or burnt terminal that has lost contact
  • Terminal backed out of the connector body
  • Failed crimp or a repair splice that has separated
  • Open output stage inside the liftgate control module

How to fix it

  1. Command the latch outputs with a scan tool and note which direction produces no reaction at all
  2. Reseat the latch connector and inspect the terminals for corrosion, burning and backed out pins
  3. Measure the second actuator winding at the latch connector, an open reading condemns the assembly
  4. With the module unplugged, check continuity of the control 2 wire while flexing the harness through the boot
  5. Cut back the insulation at any suspicious point to look for broken strands inside
  6. Repair with a soldered or properly crimped and sealed joint, or fit a new latch assembly
  7. Clear the code, run several complete gate cycles and confirm both directions operate every time
