What does it mean?
B1982 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Latch Control 1 Circuit Open .
Symptoms
- Latch does not move at all on command, with no sound from the actuator
- Gate must be operated entirely by hand
- Warning chime sounds and the powered function is locked out
- Ajar warning stuck on or not working at all
- Fault often appears after work at the rear of the vehicle or after the gate has been removed
Likely causes
- Latch connector unplugged or not fully latched after body, glass or trim work
- Broken wire inside the rubber boot between the body and the gate, the usual failure point
- Open winding in the latch actuator motor
- Corroded terminal in the latch or module connector giving an effectively open joint
- Terminal pushed back out of the connector body so it never makes contact
- Previous harness repair pulled apart or a crimp that has failed
- Open output driver inside the liftgate control module
How to fix it
- Command the latch with the scan tool and listen at the actuator, silence with no current draw supports an open circuit
- Check that the latch connector is fully home and free of corrosion, then reseat it and retest
- Measure the actuator winding resistance at its connector, an open reading condemns the latch assembly
- With the module unplugged, check continuity of the control wire from end to end and flex the boot harness while measuring
- Inspect inside the boot for broken strands under the insulation, a common hidden failure
- Repair the broken wire with a proper crimp and seal, or fit a new latch assembly if the winding is open
- Clear the code, run several open and close cycles and confirm the fault does not return
