What does it mean?
B1997 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger-side Side Air Bag Module Circuit Short To Body Ground .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp lit constantly with the passenger side airbag disabled
- Code sets again as soon as it is cleared
- Fault can often be triggered by sliding or reclining the seat
- Passenger airbag status indicator behaving abnormally
- Further restraint codes stored when the same loom section is damaged
Likely causes
- Squib wiring crushed under the passenger seat by the rails or by objects pushed underneath
- Yellow connector under the seat wet, corroded or not fully latched
- Loom chafed where it crosses the seat frame and flexes with recline adjustment
- Seat cover, heated seat pad or aftermarket accessory pinching the airbag wiring
- Internal short inside the seat mounted airbag module
- Damage from earlier seat removal or upholstery work
- Faulty side airbag circuit inside the restraint control module
How to fix it
- Establish whether the code is current or intermittent, and whether seat movement triggers it
- Switch off the ignition, disconnect the battery and wait the specified time before touching the yellow connector under the seat
- Use an approved squib load tool in place of the airbag instead of measuring the inflator
- Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, a damaged shorting bar and a lock that is not home
- With both ends disconnected, measure each squib wire to body ground, a low reading confirms the short
- Move the seat through its full travel while monitoring, so a wire pinched at one position is caught
- Repair the harness or replace the seat airbag module, then clear the code and confirm the lamp finishes its self check and stays off
