Mirror Driver Horizontal Feedback Potentiometer Circuit Short to Ground

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Watch the driver mirror horizontal position value in live data; a value locked at the bottom while the mirror moves confirms the short to ground.

What does it mean?

B2323 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Headlamp Washer Motor Control Circuit Low .

Symptoms

  • The driver mirror will not tilt up and down, or moves only one way and strains at the stop.
  • Memory recall no longer sets the driver mirror although the passenger mirror still works.
  • The horizontal position value in live data remains at the low end regardless of mirror movement.
  • New memory positions for the driver mirror are rejected.
  • The problem starts after water entered the mirror or after door panel work.

Likely causes

  • Feedback wire chafed against the door inner panel, a bracket edge or the window regulator rail on the driver side.
  • Water inside the driver mirror housing or the door connector creating a path to the metal shell.
  • Terminal pushed back in the mirror or module connector and touching the housing or a ground pin.
  • Internal short between the potentiometer track and the actuator body.
  • Missing five volt reference from the door module, which produces the same near zero reading.
  • Harness crushed when the door trim, mirror or speaker was refitted.
  • Door module input stage failure.

How to fix it

  1. Watch the driver mirror horizontal position value in live data; a value locked at the bottom while the mirror moves confirms the short to ground.
  2. Measure the five volt reference at the mirror connector first, because losing it looks identical on the scan tool.
  3. Unplug the mirror and measure resistance from the feedback wire to ground on the harness side; a very low reading proves the short.
  4. If the harness is clean, check the potentiometer resistance through its travel for a shorted or badly worn track.
  5. Inspect the driver door loom in the rubber boot, along the inner panel and around the regulator for chafing and crushing.
  6. Repair the wiring with sealed crimped joints, replace corroded terminals and dry and reseal the mirror if water is present.
  7. Replace the mirror actuator once it is proven faulty, then relearn the mirror memory positions.
