First step

Check the reach position value in live data; a value locked near zero while the column moves confirms the short to ground.

What does it mean?

B2331 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Column Reach Feedback Potentiometer Circuit Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • The column will not telescope out, or moves only in one direction and strains at the stop.
  • Memory recall no longer sets the column reach position while tilt may still work.
  • The reach position value in live data stays at the bottom of the scale whatever the column does.
  • Easy entry and exit movement and column memory storing are disabled.
  • The fault often follows a spill into the lower column or work behind the column shrouds.

Likely causes

  • Signal wire rubbed through against the column bracket, a metal edge or a fastener inside the lower dash.
  • Liquid spilled into the column area creating a conductive path from the signal pin to the shell or a ground pin.
  • Terminal pushed back in the connector and touching the housing or an adjacent ground contact.
  • Internal short between the potentiometer track and the actuator body.
  • Missing five volt reference from the column module, which produces the same near zero reading.
  • Harness crushed by the column mechanism during adjustment or after previous repair work.
  • Column control module input stage failure.

How to fix it

  1. Check the reach position value in live data; a value locked near zero while the column moves confirms the short to ground.
  2. Measure the five volt reference at the potentiometer connector first, because losing it looks identical on the scan tool.
  3. Unplug the potentiometer and measure resistance between the feedback wire and ground on the harness side; a very low value proves the short.
  4. If the harness is clean, measure the potentiometer through its travel to find a shorted or badly worn track.
  5. Inspect the column loom where it flexes with the tilt and telescope mechanism for chafing, crushing and trapped sections.
  6. Repair the wiring with sealed crimped joints, replace corroded terminals and dry out any spilled liquid.
  7. Replace the potentiometer or actuator assembly only when it is proven at fault, then relearn the column memory positions.
