What does it mean?
C1192 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Failure . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS, traction and stability control lamps on, sometimes only after several minutes of driving
- ABS is switched off, so there is no pedal pulsing and the wheels can lock in a hard stop
- The fault can disappear after a restart and return later, often on rough roads or in cold weather
- Longer stopping distances on wet or loose surfaces while normal braking feels unchanged
- ABS self-test noise at key-on missing, delayed or repeated several times
Likely causes
- Relay that pulls in but has high resistance across its contacts, so the valve supply is weak
- Corroded or heat damaged terminals in the relay socket and the high current fuse holder
- Poor ground for the ABS hydraulic unit due to a rusted, loose or overpainted ground stud
- Damp inside the ABS module connector giving unstable feedback voltage on the monitoring pin
- Harness insulation hardened and cracked by engine bay heat, breaking contact under vibration
- Battery or charging system that cannot hold voltage when the pump and valves load the circuit
- Failed feedback or driver circuit inside the ABS control module
How to fix it
- Test the battery, the charging system and the main ground straps under load before touching the ABS components
- Look at the freeze frame for the voltage recorded when the code was stored; a low value usually explains the fault
- Remove the valve relay and examine the contacts and socket for pitting, discolouration and loose terminals
- Check the ABS fuses and their holders with a meter and feel for heat damage on the plastic
- Clean the ABS hydraulic unit ground back to bare metal, retighten it and repeat the voltage drop measurements
- Inspect the ABS module connector for moisture and corrosion, then wiggle test the harness with the meter connected
- Only after supply, ground, fuse and relay all measure correctly should the ABS control module be repaired or replaced and coded
