What does it mean?

C1197 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Short to Ground . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control lamps on constantly from key-on, usually with the traction control lamp
  • ABS is inoperative: no pedal pulsing and wheels can lock during an emergency stop
  • Blown ABS fuse, often blowing again soon after replacement, or a rapid buzzing from the relay box
  • Braking on wet, icy or gravel surfaces takes noticeably longer
  • Hill-start assist and brake force distribution stop working and the red brake lamp may light

Likely causes

  • Insulation rubbed away where the loom touches a bracket, body seam or the hydraulic unit body
  • Water and road salt inside the relay box forming a leakage path to the vehicle body
  • Relay shorted internally between its winding and metal frame
  • Loom pinched or crushed by a component fitted incorrectly during earlier work
  • Corroded ABS module connector letting a swollen terminal touch the metal housing
  • Physical damage low in the engine bay from stones, debris or rodents
  • ABS module low side driver failed short, clamping the circuit to ground

How to fix it

  1. Check the ABS fuses; the blown fuse identifies the branch of the circuit that is grounded
  2. Read the full chassis code list — a block of valve and relay codes at once means one common circuit, not several failed valves
  3. Open, dry and inspect the fuse and relay box for water tracks, corrosion and heat damaged terminals
  4. With the relay removed and the ABS module unplugged, measure resistance from the relay control terminal to chassis ground; near zero confirms the short
  5. Unwrap the harness along its whole route to the hydraulic unit and inspect every clip, bracket and grommet for chafe marks
  6. Bench test the relay for a winding to case short and replace it if it fails
  7. Repair the wiring with sealed joints, reroute it clear of the damage point, then clear codes and confirm the ABS self-test runs
