What does it mean?
C1196 is a Chassis (ABS, traction control, steering) fault code. It indicates: ABS Hydraulic Valve Power Relay Circuit Failure . This is a standardised OBD-II code. The technical definition is the same regardless of the make or model of vehicle, although specific causes and symptoms can vary between vehicles.
Symptoms
- ABS lamp on with the traction and stability control lamps, sometimes only once the car has warmed up
- ABS is switched off, so there is no pedal pulsing and stopping distances on slippery surfaces increase
- Fault clears on restart and returns later, often on rough surfaces or in cold or wet conditions
- Everyday braking feels completely normal, which hides the fault from the driver
- ABS self-test sound at key-on is weak, delayed, repeated or missing
Likely causes
- Ageing relay with high contact resistance that only fails when hot or under full valve load
- Loose, oxidised or heat damaged terminals in the relay socket or the fuse holder
- Voltage drop along an old harness section between the battery, the fuse box and the hydraulic unit
- Corroded ABS module connector giving an unstable reading on the supply monitoring pin
- Rusted or loose ground connection for the ABS hydraulic assembly
- Battery or alternator unable to hold voltage while the pump and valves draw current
- Fault inside the ABS control module supply monitoring or driver circuitry
How to fix it
- Test the battery and charging system first, then measure voltage drop under load on the main feed and ground paths
- Check the freeze frame voltage stored with the code, which usually shows whether a supply problem was present
- Pull the valve relay and inspect the contacts and socket for pitting, heat marks and spread terminals
- Meter check the ABS fuses and inspect their holders for discolouration and softening
- Clean and retighten the ABS ground stud back to bright metal, then repeat the voltage drop tests
- Inspect the module connector for moisture and corrosion and perform a wiggle test with a meter connected to catch intermittent faults
- If the relay, fuse, wiring and grounds all pass, repair or replace the ABS control module and code it to the vehicle
