What does it mean?
P1279 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Starter Control Circuit 2 Open .
Symptoms
- The MIL is on and the engine does not crank when the key is turned
- Intermittent no start, where a second attempt sometimes works
- No click from the starter relay when starting is requested
- Remote or keyless starting functions not working
- Dash lights stay bright during the attempt, showing the starter never engaged
- All other engine functions normal once the vehicle is running
Likely causes
- Failed starter relay with an open coil or burnt contacts
- Corroded, loose or heat-damaged relay socket terminals
- Broken control wire between the module and the relay
- Blown fuse in the starter control supply
- Poor ground for the relay coil or a corroded ground stud
- Damaged terminals or moisture in a connector along the starting circuit
- Module output driver open, considered after the wiring has been checked
How to fix it
- Confirm the battery is charged and the main connections are clean before testing the control circuit
- Try to crank while listening at the relay box for a click, and check the state of the start request on live data
- Swap the starter relay with an identical relay from another circuit to see whether cranking returns
- Measure the relay coil supply and the module control wire at the socket during a start attempt
- Check the fuse and the relay coil ground for continuity and voltage drop
- Test the control wire from the module to the relay for continuity with both ends disconnected
- Repair the open circuit, renew the relay or socket, then confirm reliable cranking and that the code does not return
