What does it mean?
P1281 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: TP Sensors Mismatch .
Symptoms
- The MIL is on, usually with a reduced power warning lamp
- Limp mode with the engine held at a low rev limit
- Erratic, hunting or high idle
- Poor and inconsistent throttle response, sometimes surging while cruising
- Stalling when lifting off the pedal
- Fault often returns shortly after clearing if the throttle body is dirty
Likely causes
- Carbon build-up on the throttle plate and bore holding the plate off its true rest position
- One throttle position sensor track worn or contaminated inside the throttle body
- Corroded or loose terminals in the throttle body connector
- Shared 5 volt reference or ground with high resistance, shifting only one signal
- Chafed wiring causing crosstalk or an intermittent short between the two signals
- Throttle body replaced or cleaned without the required relearn procedure
- Sticking throttle plate return mechanism
How to fix it
- Graph both throttle position signals together and open the throttle with the actuator test or by pedal, watching for one signal lagging or stepping
- Inspect the throttle bore and plate for carbon build-up and clean it with an appropriate cleaner if needed
- Check that the throttle plate moves freely and returns to its rest position without sticking
- Inspect the throttle body connector for corrosion, pin tension and moisture
- Measure the reference voltage and ground at the throttle body with the ignition on, and voltage drop test the ground
- Carry out the throttle relearn procedure after any cleaning or connector work
- Replace the throttle body assembly if one sensor track remains out of step with the other after cleaning and wiring checks
