What does it mean?
P1286 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 3 Range/Performance .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on, usually with other pedal or throttle codes stored
- Reduced power or limp mode with throttle opening capped
- Pedal feels unresponsive, or engine speed surges while the pedal is held steady
- Idle hunting and hesitation on light throttle
- Cruise control disabled
Likely causes
- Worn or contaminated APP sensor 3 track inside the pedal assembly, producing a skewed or flat-spotted signal
- Corroded, spread or backed-out terminals in the accelerator pedal connector
- Chafed signal wire between the pedal and the PCM (powertrain control module) causing intermittent resistance
- High-resistance 5 V reference or sensor ground shared with other sensors
- Water intrusion into the pedal module after a leak or a soaked carpet
- Mechanical binding of the pedal arm, or a floor mat holding the pedal off its rest stop
- Internal PCM input fault, only after everything upstream checks good
How to fix it
- Read the freeze frame and note pedal angle, road speed and voltage at the moment the fault set
- Watch APP1, APP2 and APP3 live values through a slow full pedal sweep and look for a dropout or flat spot on track 3
- Wiggle-test the pedal connector and harness while watching live data
- Measure the 5 V reference and the sensor ground at the pedal connector, key on, engine off
- With the connector unplugged, check the signal wire for continuity and for shorts to ground or to battery
- Replace the accelerator pedal assembly when track 3 is proven faulty; on most designs the sensor is not sold separately
- Clear codes, perform any required pedal or idle relearn, then road test to confirm
