What does it mean?
P1285 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor 3 Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- The MIL is on, usually with a reduced power warning and often with pedal correlation codes
- Limp mode with the engine held at a low rev ceiling
- Weak, delayed or completely absent pedal response
- Idle speed higher than normal or unstable
- Cruise control and torque based driver assistance functions unavailable
- The fault can be intermittent, appearing over bumps or with heavy pedal use
Likely causes
- Open circuit, short to ground or short to voltage in the sensor 3 signal wire
- Reference voltage or ground for the third track missing or intermittent
- Corroded or damp terminals in the pedal connector, especially the less used pins
- Worn or contaminated third track inside the pedal unit
- Harness damage under the carpet, at the bulkhead grommet or where the loom follows the pedal
- Poorly made repair splice or a terminal fitted into the wrong cavity
- Faulty pedal sensor assembly, or a module input fault once the wiring is proven
How to fix it
- Graph all pedal tracks on live data and press the pedal slowly through full travel, identifying where the third signal drops out or sticks
- Inspect the pedal connector for moisture, corrosion and pin tension, paying attention to the third track pins
- Measure the reference voltage and sensor ground for the third track with the ignition on
- Back-probe the sensor 3 signal and record its voltage at rest and at wide open pedal
- With the connectors unplugged at both ends, test the sensor 3 wire for continuity, short to ground and short to voltage
- Wiggle the loom under the carpet and at the bulkhead while watching live data to expose an intermittent
- Replace the pedal position sensor assembly when the wiring tests good, then complete the pedal learn procedure and confirm all three tracks agree
