What does it mean?
P1298 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Electrical Load Detector (ELD) Circuit High Voltage .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on
- Charging voltage held high, with a hot battery, an acid smell or bulbs failing early
- Alternatively the charging system defaults to a fixed output and the battery slowly discharges
- Lights flicker or brighten noticeably when loads change
- Idle does not compensate for electrical load
Likely causes
- ELD signal wire open, or the detector connector unplugged after previous work
- Signal wire shorted to a voltage source inside the fuse box or the harness
- Failed ELD reading at full scale
- Poor or missing ground for the detector
- Damaged, pushed-back or corroded pins in the under-hood fuse box
- Engine control module input fault, only after the circuit checks good
How to fix it
- Read the ELD live value and see whether it reacts at all when major consumers are switched on
- Check that the ELD connector is fully seated and that no pins are backed out
- Measure the detector's ground with a voltage drop test, and check its supply with the key on
- Test the signal wire for an open circuit and for a short to battery voltage between the detector and the module
- Measure real charging voltage at the battery and compare it with the value the module reports
- Repair the wiring fault or replace the ELD/fuse box assembly if the circuit is proven good
- Clear the code and verify normal charging behaviour under changing load
