What does it mean?
P1353 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Ignition Coil 'B' Primary Circuit .
Symptoms
- Misfire on the cylinder or pair driven by coil 'B', with shaking at idle
- Check engine light on, flashing during heavy misfire
- Reduced power, hesitation and a stumble when accelerating
- Fuel smell from the exhaust and increased consumption
- Rough or extended starting, particularly when cold or damp
Likely causes
- Open or high-resistance primary winding inside coil 'B'
- Broken, chafed or corroded coil control wire between the module and the coil
- Coil supply circuit open because of a failed fuse, relay contact or feed splice
- Loose connector or a terminal that has backed out of the coil plug
- Water or oil in the coil connector causing corrosion and resistance
- Poor ground for the ignition system, affecting current flow through the primary
- Failed coil driver in the control module, evaluated after the circuit checks out
How to fix it
- Identify coil 'B' for that engine from the wiring layout rather than assuming a cylinder number
- Inspect the coil connector and boot for moisture, oil and corroded or spread terminals
- Measure the primary resistance of coil 'B' and compare it with the other coils on the engine
- Confirm battery voltage reaches the coil supply pin with the key on
- Check the control wire for continuity to the module and for shorts to ground or voltage
- Swap coil 'B' with a neighbouring coil and see whether the fault moves with the coil
- Replace the coil if it is out of specification, repair any wiring fault found, then clear the code and retest
