What does it mean?
P1359 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: CKP/TDC/CYP Sensor Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- Engine cranks but will not start, with no spark and often no injector pulse
- Intermittent stalling that gets worse once the engine is hot
- Sudden cut-out while driving followed by a restart after a cooling period
- Check engine light on with crank or cylinder identification codes stored
- Tachometer dead or erratic during cranking
Likely causes
- Failed sensor assembly inside the distributor, a common wear item on this layout
- Engine oil leaking past the distributor shaft seal and contaminating the sensor windings
- Open, shorted or chafed wiring in the sensor harness leaving the distributor
- Corroded or loose connector at the distributor or at the module
- Worn distributor shaft or bearing, changing the air gap and distorting the signals
- Missing sensor supply voltage or a poor ground caused by a corroded ground point
- Failed module input circuit, considered after the sensors and wiring have been tested
How to fix it
- Check for rpm signal in live data during cranking; no rpm points straight at these sensors or their wiring
- Inspect the distributor for oil leakage, and check whether oil has reached the internal sensor assembly
- Unplug the connector and inspect for corrosion, bent pins and moisture
- Measure sensor resistance against specification and check for a short to ground or to the housing
- Verify supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector with the key on
- Heat the distributor area if the fault is heat-related and repeat the tests to catch the failure as it happens
- Replace the sensor assembly or the distributor as the design requires, then confirm a stable rpm signal hot and cold
