What does it mean?
P1392 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected Catalyst Damaging, Fuel Level Low .
Symptoms
- MIL flashing during the misfire event, warning of catalytic converter damage
- Pronounced shake at idle and vibration under load
- Hesitation, jerking and clear power loss during acceleration
- Fuel gauge close to empty when the fault sets
- Unburnt fuel smell from the exhaust
- Possible stalling on a steep incline or in a hard turn
Likely causes
- Very low fuel level letting the pump uncover and draw air during cornering or on slopes
- Spark plug on cylinder 2 worn, fouled or with a widened gap
- Ignition coil or plug boot failing on that cylinder
- Injector on cylinder 2 clogged, sticking or electrically open
- Intake leak at that port, a cracked gasket or a leaking vacuum fitting
- Low compression on cylinder 2 from a burnt valve, worn rings or tight valve clearance
- Weak fuel pump or a blocked filter, which shows itself first when the tank is nearly empty
How to fix it
- Refuel to a normal level first and re-check whether the misfire clears
- Read the misfire counters per cylinder and confirm the count is on cylinder 2
- Move the coil and spark plug from cylinder 2 to another cylinder and see if the counter follows
- Inspect the removed plug for wear, oil, carbon or fuel washing
- Check the injector electrically and acoustically, and compare short and long term fuel trims
- Measure fuel pressure under load and inspect the filter and in-tank strainer
- If ignition and fuel are good, perform a compression and leak down test on cylinder 2
- Do not keep driving while the lamp is flashing, the converter can overheat quickly
