Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Disconnect any aftermarket device tapped into the rpm signal and retest first

What does it mean?

P1398 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Engine RPM Signal, TD Short to Ground .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Tachometer dead or reading incorrectly
  • On some systems rough running or a no-start condition
  • Idle control or accessory functions behaving abnormally
  • Additional communication or engine speed related codes stored

Likely causes

  • Engine speed output wire shorted to ground by a chafed or crushed harness section
  • Corroded or water filled connector on the rpm output circuit
  • A device connected to the rpm line, such as the tachometer or an immobiliser, failing and loading the circuit
  • Aftermarket electronics tapped into the rpm signal with a poor connection
  • Damaged output driver inside the control unit
  • Poor ground reference between modules making the line appear shorted
  • Broken or bridged pin inside a shared connector

How to fix it

  1. Disconnect any aftermarket device tapped into the rpm signal and retest first
  2. Unplug the control unit connector and measure the circuit: a permanent ground indicates a wiring short
  3. Follow the harness through bulkhead pass-throughs and along brackets looking for chafe damage
  4. Inspect connectors for water, corrosion and bent or bridged pins
  5. Isolate the circuit branch by branch, disconnecting one consumer at a time until the short clears
  6. Repair the shorted section, then confirm the tachometer works and clear the code
  7. Replace the control unit only after the wiring and every connected device are proven good
