What does it mean?
P1453 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Secondary Air Injector Valve Circuit Electrical Malfunction (Disconnection) .
Symptoms
- MIL on with the secondary air readiness monitor incomplete
- Valve never operates, so no air is delivered on cold start
- Higher hydrocarbon emissions and a raw exhaust smell in the first minute
- Slightly rough cold idle
- No click from the valve when commanded, and no current draw measurable
Likely causes
- Valve connector unplugged, loose or with terminals pushed back out of the housing
- Broken wire in the control or supply circuit, often at a flex point or a previous repair
- Internally open solenoid winding in the injector valve
- Corroded terminals creating an effectively open connection
- Blown fuse or open relay contact removing the valve supply
- Open ground path for the air injection circuit
- Harness break where the wiring passes a grommet or a moving component
How to fix it
- Confirm the valve connector is fully latched and inspect for pushed back or corroded terminals
- Command the valve with a scan tool and listen for solenoid movement
- Measure the solenoid resistance; an infinite reading confirms an open winding
- With the key on, check for supply voltage at the valve connector and verify the relevant fuse and relay
- Perform continuity tests on the control wire and the ground path back to their sources
- Wiggle the harness while monitoring continuity to catch an intermittent break
- Repair the open circuit or replace the valve, then rerun a cold start monitor to confirm the fix
