What does it mean?
P1456 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: EVAP System Fuel Level Sensor Failure and Very Small Leak Detected .
Symptoms
- MIL on with the EVAP readiness monitor incomplete
- Very faint fuel vapour smell, sometimes only noticeable in a closed garage
- Fuel gauge inaccurate or jumping
- No effect on engine performance or starting
- The code often appears only after specific fuel level and temperature conditions are met
Likely causes
- Filler cap seal hardened or slightly damaged so it does not seal completely
- Hairline crack or pinhole in a vapour hose, often only leaking when warm
- Weeping seal at the fuel pump or sender flange on the tank
- Vent or purge valve seat not sealing perfectly when closed
- Porous or hairline cracked charcoal canister
- Loose hose fitting or a clamp that has relaxed with age
- Fuel level sender with a worn track or corroded terminals making the level input implausible
How to fix it
- Inspect and reseat the filler cap, checking the seal for hardening, cuts and deformation
- Compare the fuel level reading in live data with the actual tank content, and check the sender connector for corrosion
- Introduce smoke into the EVAP system under low pressure and search patiently, since a very small leak takes time to show
- Focus on the tank flange seal, hose ends, canister body and every fitting along the underbody
- Command the vent valve closed and verify the system holds a stable pressure over several minutes
- Check the purge valve for a slight leak when it is closed
- Repair the small leak and the level sensor circuit, then clear codes and complete an EVAP monitor drive cycle to confirm
