Evaporative System Vacuum Test Malfunction

Jump to the fix

Severity

Low

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable; have it fixed at the first opportunity.

First step

Observe the tank pressure value with the engine off, then command the purge valve and watch whether the value responds

What does it mean?

P1454 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem .

Symptoms

  • MIL on with the EVAP readiness monitor incomplete
  • Tank pressure value in live data barely moves during purge activity
  • Occasional fuel vapour smell if the system does not seal properly
  • Rough idle after refuelling in some cases, when purge control is disturbed
  • No obvious loss of power

Likely causes

  • Sensor drifted out of calibration and reporting a nearly fixed value
  • Blocked, kinked or cracked hose between the tank and the sensor port
  • Contamination from fuel or debris inside the sensor port
  • Purge or vent valve leaking, so the tank never sees the expected pressure change
  • High resistance in the sensor signal, reference or ground wiring
  • Corroded connector at the tank flange, common in vehicles used on salted roads
  • Small EVAP leak preventing pressure from changing as the test expects

How to fix it

  1. Observe the tank pressure value with the engine off, then command the purge valve and watch whether the value responds
  2. Compare the reading against atmospheric pressure with the filler cap removed; the sensor should read close to zero differential
  3. Inspect the sensor hose and port for blockage, cracks and fuel contamination
  4. Check the connector at the tank flange for corrosion, water and loose terminals
  5. Verify the 5 volt reference and ground at the sensor with the key on
  6. Test the purge and vent valves for leaks, since a leaking valve mimics a lazy sensor
  7. Replace the pressure sensor once wiring and valves are proven good, then complete an EVAP monitor drive cycle
