What does it mean?
P1474 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Hydraulic Cooling Fan Primary Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Coolant temperature climbs at idle and in slow traffic but settles on the highway
- The fan does not spin up as engine temperature rises
- A/C cooling drops off at low road speed because condenser airflow is missing
- Whine or groan from the power steering pump when the fan is commanded
Likely causes
- Open or shorted control circuit to the hydraulic cooling fan solenoid
- Failed fan control solenoid coil
- Corroded connector at the solenoid, which sits at the front of the vehicle in road spray
- Chafed wiring between the control module and the solenoid
- Loss of power feed or a poor ground at the solenoid
- Low power steering fluid or a weak pump, since this fan is driven hydraulically
- Module output driver failure
How to fix it
- Watch commanded fan duty against coolant temperature on the scan tool during warm up
- Inspect the solenoid connector and front harness for corrosion and impact damage
- Measure solenoid coil resistance and compare it with the specified value
- Check for the control signal at the solenoid while the fan is commanded on
- Verify power steering fluid level and condition, because the fan drive depends on it
- Repair wiring faults first, then replace the solenoid if it fails its electrical test
- Confirm the fan spins up under load and the engine holds a normal temperature
