What does it mean?
P1493 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit Low Input .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- Charging voltage held at the wrong level, most often too low
- Battery slowly discharges and never reaches full charge
- Slow cranking after a few days of short trips
- Scan tool reports an unrealistically high battery temperature
- Accessory voltage fluctuates noticeably
Likely causes
- Battery temperature sensor signal wire shorted to ground
- Sensor thermistor shorted internally
- Corrosion bridging pins inside the sensor connector
- Harness damaged and grounded near the battery tray
- Acid contamination creating a conductive path across the circuit
- Loss of the reference voltage supply to the sensor
- Module input circuit fault
How to fix it
- Read the reported battery temperature and compare it with reality after a cold soak
- Disconnect the sensor: if the value swings to the opposite extreme, the wiring is intact and the sensor is at fault
- With the sensor unplugged, measure resistance from the signal wire to ground
- Inspect for acid damage and clean or replace corroded connectors and terminals
- Check sensor resistance against the manufacturer temperature chart
- Repair the shorted wire or replace the sensor
- Verify charging voltage across the load range, then clear the code
