What does it mean?
P1497 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: EGR Solenoid Valve Signal #3 Circuit Malfunction (High Input) .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- EGR flow incorrect, giving knock and pinging under load or a rough idle
- Hesitation and flat spots during acceleration
- Higher fuel consumption than usual
- Idle may surge if a solenoid stays energised
- Emissions test failure
Likely causes
- Open in the signal 3 control circuit, which makes the module driver read high
- Signal wire shorted to battery voltage
- EGR solenoid winding open internally
- Connector at the EGR solenoid pack corroded or heat damaged
- Harness chafed against the intake, the manifold or a mounting bracket
- Poor common ground for the solenoid pack
- Module output driver fault
How to fix it
- Check whether other EGR solenoid codes are stored, which would point to a shared feed or ground problem
- Inspect the EGR connector for heat damage, melted pins and corrosion
- Measure the resistance of each solenoid winding and compare them with one another
- Test the control wire for continuity to the module and for a short to power
- Verify the common feed voltage at the solenoid pack with the key on
- Repair the harness or replace the solenoid assembly
- Clear codes, then verify EGR operation on live data under load
