What does it mean?
P1498 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: EGR Solenoid Valve Signal #4 Circuit Malfunction (Low Input) .
Symptoms
- MIL on
- EGR valve held partly open, causing a rough idle and stalling at low speed
- Hesitation and lack of power under light acceleration
- Sooty exhaust smell or visible smoke on some engines
- Increased fuel consumption
- Emissions test failure
Likely causes
- Signal 4 control wire shorted to ground
- EGR solenoid winding shorted internally
- Corrosion bridging pins inside the EGR solenoid connector
- Harness chafed and grounding against the cylinder head or a bracket
- Oil or water contamination inside the connector creating a conductive path
- Module driver stuck low from an internal failure
- Wiring damaged during previous intake manifold service
How to fix it
- Note which EGR signal codes are present to isolate the affected winding
- Disconnect the solenoid assembly and measure resistance from the signal wire to ground
- Measure each solenoid winding resistance and compare it with the others in the pack
- Inspect the connector for oil, water and corroded terminals
- Follow the harness looking for chafe points and repair the insulation
- Replace the EGR solenoid assembly if one winding tests shorted
- Clear codes and confirm proper EGR operation under road load
