Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Command the switch-over valve with a scan tool and watch for a response

  • 99Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1499 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler Switch-over Valve 2 Open circuit/short circuit to ground .

Symptoms

  • MIL on
  • Longer warm up time, or the engine running cooler than it should
  • Higher emissions, and on diesel engines problems completing particulate filter regeneration
  • Rough running while the engine is cold
  • Reduced power or a protective limp mode in some cases
  • Coolant temperature behaving unusually during warm up

Likely causes

  • Open circuit or short to ground in the control wiring of the EGR cooler switch-over valve
  • Failed switch-over valve solenoid, open or shorted internally
  • Connector near the exhaust side of the engine corroded or heat damaged
  • Harness chafed against hot components or a bracket
  • Blown fuse or lost supply voltage to the valve
  • Valve mechanism clogged with soot, raising current draw and stressing the circuit
  • Control module output driver failure

How to fix it

  1. Command the switch-over valve with a scan tool and watch for a response
  2. Inspect the connector and harness near the EGR cooler for heat and chafe damage
  3. Verify supply voltage at the valve and check the circuit fuse
  4. Measure the solenoid resistance and compare it with specification
  5. Test the control wire for continuity to the module and for a short to ground
  6. Clean or replace a soot clogged valve and repair damaged wiring
  7. Clear the code and verify normal coolant temperature behaviour through a full warm up
