What does it mean?
P1739 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: A/T 3rd Pressure Switch Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- MIL (check engine lamp) on together with a transmission warning
- Third gear slips, engages harshly or is skipped entirely
- Engine RPM flares during the shift into third
- Limp mode after repeated faults, with reduced top speed
- Fluid smells hot after driving and shift quality worsens as it warms
Likely causes
- Failed pressure switch that no longer changes state under pressure
- Broken, chafed or shorted signal wire between the switch and the module
- Corroded case connector pins from ATF leaking into the harness
- Insufficient line pressure caused by low fluid, a worn pump or an internal leak
- Stuck shift valve or solenoid preventing the third gear circuit from filling
- Worn third gear clutch pack or damaged sealing rings bleeding pressure
- Module input fault, tested only after the circuit and pressure check out
How to fix it
- Record pressure switch states and gear commands during a full road test
- Verify fluid level, colour and smell, and correct any shortfall first
- Inspect the external connector and internal harness for fluid soaking and corrosion
- Test switch continuity off the vehicle with shop air applied to the port
- Measure line and third gear circuit pressure with a gauge and compare with specification
- Inspect the valve body, screens and filter for varnish and metallic debris
- Replace the faulty switch or valve body, then confirm the switch follows every shift
