Coast Clutch Solenoid Circuit Malfunction

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Check the transmission fuse, system voltage and fluid level before circuit testing

  • 54Sequence number

What does it mean?

P1754 is a Powertrain (engine, transmission, fuel system) fault code. It indicates: Coast Clutch Solenoid Circuit Malfunction .

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine lamp) on with a transmission warning lamp
  • Little or no engine braking when lifting off the pedal
  • Harsh or slipping shifts in the higher gears
  • Limp mode with a reduced number of available gears
  • Engine RPM flares on deceleration or during a downshift

Likely causes

  • Open or shorted coast clutch solenoid winding
  • Short to ground or short to battery on the solenoid drive wire
  • Corroded or ATF filled case connector with damaged terminals
  • Chafed internal harness rubbing against the valve body or pan rail
  • High resistance joint or a broken wire between the module and the solenoid
  • Blown fuse or an interrupted supply feeding the solenoid pack
  • Module output driver failure, tested last in the diagnostic sequence

How to fix it

  1. Check the transmission fuse, system voltage and fluid level before circuit testing
  2. Measure coast clutch solenoid resistance at the case connector and compare with specification
  3. With the solenoid unplugged, test the drive circuit for continuity, short to ground and short to battery
  4. Command the solenoid with a scan tool and listen or watch for a hydraulic response
  5. Check insulation between the solenoid terminal and the transmission case
  6. Inspect the internal harness and case connector for fluid soaking and chafing
  7. Replace the solenoid or repair the wiring, then confirm engine braking returns on a road test
