SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Engine Air Intake

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Test battery condition and charging voltage first, then clear codes and recheck which ones return

  • 11Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1011 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Invalid Internal Control Module Monitoring Data Received From ECM/PCM .

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) and other warning lamps on together
  • Engine may run poorly, be slow to start or refuse to start
  • Reduced power or limp mode with a limited RPM ceiling
  • Scan tool loses or drops communication with the engine controller intermittently
  • Several unrelated codes appearing at once across different systems
  • Fault often worse with a weak battery or in wet weather

Likely causes

  • Internal processor or memory fault inside the ECM/PCM
  • Software or calibration level of the ECM/PCM does not match the rest of the vehicle after programming or a module swap
  • Low or unstable supply voltage to the ECM/PCM, especially during cranking
  • Corroded, wet or loose ECM/PCM connector, which is common where the module sits in a damp area
  • Damaged bus wiring, a broken twisted pair or a poor splice between the ECM/PCM and the gateway
  • High resistance ECM/PCM ground causing corrupted internal test results
  • A serious unresolved powertrain fault causing the engine controller to report failed internal monitors

How to fix it

  1. Test battery condition and charging voltage first, then clear codes and recheck which ones return
  2. Inspect the ECM/PCM connectors for water, corrosion, pushed-back terminals and damaged seals
  3. Perform voltage drop tests on all ECM/PCM power feeds and grounds while the engine cranks
  4. Check the ECM/PCM software and calibration level against what the vehicle requires and reprogram if it is wrong
  5. Read codes in every module to see whether another controller reports the same problem, which narrows the fault to the bus or to the ECM/PCM itself
  6. Inspect the bus wiring between the ECM/PCM and the gateway for chafing, poor repairs and untwisted sections
  7. Address any other stored powertrain faults first, since failed internal monitors can be a consequence rather than the cause
  8. Replace or rebuild the ECM/PCM only when wiring, grounds, voltage and software have all been verified
