What does it mean?
U1017 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Lost Communication With Engine Control Module .
Symptoms
- Engine cuts out while driving and may restart after a pause
- Check engine light (MIL) on together with ABS, stability and transmission lamps
- Tachometer drops to zero momentarily while the engine is still running
- Intermittent no-start with normal cranking
- Scan tool communication with the engine controller comes and goes
- Fault often triggered by rough roads, vibration or wet weather
Likely causes
- Intermittent open or high resistance in the bus wiring to the engine controller, often at a connector or an old repair
- Corroded, wet or loosely latched ECM connector allowing the link to drop under vibration
- Chafed harness at the bulkhead or along the engine, shorting a bus line momentarily
- Poor ECM ground causing the module to reset while driving
- Weak battery or a failing charging system, so voltage dips take the module offline
- Internal ECM transceiver failure that only appears when hot
- Interference or damage from a badly installed alarm, tracker or remote start unit
How to fix it
- Read codes from all modules and check the freeze frame data to see the conditions when communication was lost
- Carry out a wiggle test on the engine harness and bulkhead connectors while monitoring live data for dropouts
- Inspect and reseat the ECM connectors, checking seals, pin tension and corrosion
- Do voltage drop tests on the ECM power feeds and grounds with the engine running and loads switched on
- Test the battery and charging system, since voltage dips reset modules and log lost communication
- Measure bus resistance and check both lines for intermittent shorts and opens along the harness route
- Disconnect any added alarm, tracker or remote start wiring and retest
- Replace the ECM only when wiring, grounds, connectors and supply voltage have all been verified
