SCP (J1850) Invalid or Missing Data for Primary Id

Jump to the fix

Severity

Medium

Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read codes from all modules and record which are current, since an ABS internal fault usually sets follow-on codes elsewhere

  • 1Manufacturer-specific
  • 0Network / Communication
  • 12Sequence number

What does it mean?

U1012 is a Network (CAN bus, module communications) fault code. It indicates: Invalid Internal Control Module Monitoring Data Received From Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module .

Symptoms

  • ABS and stability control warning lamps on, often with the brake warning lamp
  • ABS and traction control disabled, leaving normal braking only
  • Speedometer may read incorrectly or drop out if wheel speed data is shared over the bus
  • Cruise control and hill hold functions unavailable
  • Harsh or delayed gear shifts on vehicles that use brake data for transmission control
  • Scan tool reads implausible or frozen wheel speed values

Likely causes

  • Internal fault in the ABS control module or its hydraulic control unit electronics
  • Software or configuration mismatch after the ABS module was replaced without being coded to the vehicle
  • Corroded or water damaged ABS module connector, common because the unit sits low in the engine bay
  • Low system voltage or a poor ABS module ground disturbing its internal self-tests
  • Damaged bus wiring or a broken twisted pair between the ABS module and the gateway
  • An unresolved wheel speed sensor or hydraulic fault making the module fail its own monitors
  • Corrosion at the ABS module ground point on the body or subframe

How to fix it

  1. Read codes from all modules and record which are current, since an ABS internal fault usually sets follow-on codes elsewhere
  2. Test battery and charging voltage, then clear codes and see which return with correct voltage
  3. Inspect the ABS module connector for water, corrosion, pushed-back pins and damaged seals
  4. Do a voltage drop test on the ABS module power feeds and its ground point, cleaning any corroded stud
  5. Diagnose and repair any stored wheel speed sensor or hydraulic codes before condemning the module
  6. Check the bus wiring between the ABS module and the gateway for chafing and poor previous repairs
  7. Confirm the module software and configuration match the vehicle, and code or reprogram if they do not
  8. Replace the ABS control module last, after supply, ground, wiring and configuration have been proven
