What does it mean?
B1278 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Air Mix Potentiometer-TEMP Short (High)–Console .
Symptoms
- The console or rear temperature control is locked at maximum heat or maximum cold
- The feedback value in live data sits at the top of the scale and never moves
- The actuator clicks repeatedly under the console as the module keeps trying to correct it
- Rear passengers cannot adjust their own temperature
- Front zone temperature control remains normal
Likely causes
- Internally shorted temperature feedback potentiometer inside the console air mix actuator
- Feedback wire shorted to the reference voltage where the console harness passes a bracket
- Broken or high resistance sensor ground pushing the feedback voltage to the top of the range
- Liquid spilled through the console reaching the actuator connector
- Terminal damage in the connector after repeated console disassembly
- Reference or input circuit fault inside the climate control module
How to fix it
- Sweep the console temperature setting and watch the feedback value in live data
- Remove the console trim and check the actuator connector for spilled liquid, corrosion, and damaged terminals
- Measure the reference voltage and the ground at the connector with the ignition on, since a lost ground gives the same high reading
- With both ends disconnected, test the feedback wire for a short to the reference circuit
- Measure the potentiometer resistance through its full travel
- Repair the wiring or replace the actuator, then run the climate module calibration and verify rear temperature control
