What does it mean?
B1389 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Tailgate Motor Clutch Circuit Malfunction .
Symptoms
- The tailgate is unusually hard to move by hand because the clutch never releases
- Power operation is dead, or the motor runs without moving the gate when the clutch never engages
- The gate may drift down or fall under its own weight when the clutch releases unexpectedly
- A click or buzz from the drive unit at each attempt
- Warning message about the power tailgate and the function disabled until the fault is cleared
Likely causes
- Open or shorted clutch coil inside the tailgate drive unit
- Water in the drive unit connector corroding the clutch feed and ground
- Chafed or broken clutch wire in the hinge boot where the harness flexes
- Failed clutch driver output in the tailgate control module
- Poor ground for the drive unit, giving a weak or intermittent clutch engagement
- Worn clutch drawing excessive current so the module shuts the output down
- Corroded or pushed-back terminal at the drive unit plug
How to fix it
- Measure the clutch coil resistance at the drive unit connector and compare it with the specification or the opposite side
- Check for supply and ground at the clutch circuit during a commanded operation, using the scan tool output test if available
- Inspect and dry the drive unit connector, and check every terminal for corrosion and push-back
- Flex the hinge boot harness while the circuit is being monitored to expose a broken conductor
- Clean and tighten the drive unit ground point
- Replace the drive unit if the clutch coil is open, shorted or drawing excessive current
- Run the tailgate relearn after the repair and confirm the gate can be moved by hand as designed
