Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Switch off, disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve discharge time before touching the restraint system

What does it mean?

B1434 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Side-airbag module (LH) (squib ignition drive circuit) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp remains on after the start up check and the left side airbag is inhibited
  • The airbag will not deploy in a side impact even though nothing looks disturbed
  • Fault is stored as current and returns on the next ignition cycle after clearing
  • Other restraint codes may set at the same time when the control module itself is failing
  • The vehicle otherwise starts, runs and stops completely normally

Likely causes

  • Corroded or partly mated connector between the restraint module and the left side firing branch
  • High resistance joint from a poor repair splice or a stretched, fretted terminal
  • Damaged section of the yellow harness between the module in the tunnel and the driver seat
  • Water reaching the restraint module connector after a heater matrix, windscreen or door membrane leak
  • Failure of the firing output driver inside the restraint control module
  • Airbag module fitted whose initiator resistance falls outside the accepted band
  • Weak battery or unstable supply during the ignition on self test producing a false report

How to fix it

  1. Switch off, disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve discharge time before touching the restraint system
  2. Check battery state of charge and charging voltage first, since low voltage alone can fail the drive circuit self test
  3. Unplug the restraint module connectors and inspect for water, green terminals, fretting and locks that never engaged, then refit them fully
  4. Verify the module is bolted down tightly, as its mounting also forms part of its ground path
  5. Inspect the firing pair from the module to the under seat connector for crush damage, chafe and old splices
  6. Fit the approved load tool in place of the side airbag module and retest to establish whether the fault stays with the module
  7. Replace the restraint control module last, configure it for the vehicle, clear the memory and confirm the lamp completes its self test and goes out
