Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Read the stored code and watch the switch input value on live data while each button is pressed and released

What does it mean?

B1435 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Voice Recognition/Phone Switch Input Circuit Performance .

Symptoms

  • Voice recognition or telephone button responds slowly, needs a hard press or works only sometimes
  • A press is registered as the wrong function, for example a call button acting as voice command
  • The system occasionally activates voice recognition on its own
  • Some steering wheel buttons work while others in the same group do not
  • Fault stored while audio playback itself remains normal

Likely causes

  • Resistance drift or contamination in the steering wheel switch pad, so a button no longer lands on its expected value
  • Sticking button that stays partly pressed and holds the input between two valid steps
  • Worn or dirty tracks in the clockspring raising the circuit resistance slightly
  • Corroded terminals adding resistance to the switch loop without breaking it
  • Non original steering wheel controls or an interface adapter with slightly wrong resistor values
  • Radio or steering column module misreading an input that is close to a threshold
  • Software mismatch between the head unit and the switch module after a part change

How to fix it

  1. Read the stored code and watch the switch input value on live data while each button is pressed and released
  2. Compare the measured value for each key with the specified value; a key that lands between two steps is the offending one
  3. Check for a sticking or trapped button, and clean the switch pad face where dirt or spilled liquid can affect the contacts
  4. Disconnect the battery and observe the airbag discharge time before removing the steering wheel or switch pack
  5. Measure the switch pad resistance for each key with the pad unplugged, comparing left and right pads where fitted
  6. Inspect the clockspring and the column connectors for corrosion and add resistance measurements before condemning parts
  7. Fit a correct new switch pad or clockspring as proven, check for an available software update for the audio and switch modules, then clear the code and test each function
