What does it mean?
B1436 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Voice Recognition/Phone Switch Input Circuit Low .
Symptoms
- The system behaves as if a button is being held down all the time, for example repeatedly trying to start voice recognition
- Voice or phone functions cannot be exited or cancelled
- Other buttons on the same input line stop responding because the circuit is already grounded
- Random calls or voice sessions started without anyone touching the wheel
- Fault stored and the same behaviour returns after a battery disconnect
Likely causes
- Switch pad with a shorted or permanently closed contact holding the line down
- Signal wire shorted to ground where it passes through the column loom or behind the wheel
- Liquid spilled into the switch pack bridging the resistor network
- Damaged clockspring track shorting to the wheel structure
- Corroded connector letting the signal pin leak to the connector shell or a ground pin
- Aftermarket control interface pulling the input lower than the factory values
- Faulty switch input stage inside the radio or steering column control module
How to fix it
- Read the code and observe the input on live data with no button pressed; a healthy circuit rests at its idle value rather than near zero
- Disconnect the switch pad connector and see whether the reading returns to normal, which separates the pad from the wiring
- Disconnect the battery and wait the airbag discharge time before removing the wheel or the switch pack
- Measure the pad resistance at rest and while pressing each button, looking for a contact that never opens
- Inspect the pad for liquid ingress, sticky residue or a trapped button and clean or renew it as needed
- Check the signal wire for a short to ground through the clockspring and the column loom, flexing the harness as you measure
- Replace the proven faulty switch pad or clockspring, centre the clockspring correctly on refitting, then clear the code and verify every button
