Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Never test an initiator with an ordinary meter, and always de-energise the system first.

What does it mean?

B1440 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Curtain air bag module (RH) (squib) system fault 1 (short circuit between terminals of the squib circuit) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on continuously and the right curtain airbag disabled
  • Curtain will not deploy in a side impact or rollover event
  • Fault appears right after headliner, windscreen, pillar trim or roof accessory work
  • Code sets again as current on the next ignition cycle after clearing
  • Nothing changes in how the vehicle drives, so the lamp is the only sign

Likely causes

  • Harness pinched in the A pillar, roof rail or headliner area during trim, glass or headliner work
  • Connector at the base of the A pillar only partly latched, so its shorting bar keeps both pins bridged
  • Screw driven into the roof rail loom when fitting a grab handle, sun visor or accessory
  • Water running down the A pillar from a leaking windscreen seal or roof drain into the connector
  • Internal short inside the curtain airbag inflator or its igniter
  • Wrong curtain module fitted whose initiator resistance is outside the accepted range
  • Restraint control module measuring circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Switch off, disconnect the battery and wait the specified reserve discharge time before disturbing anything
  2. Unplug the curtain airbag connector at the pillar base and inspect for a jammed shorting bar, bent pins, moisture and dirt, then reseat it until it locks
  3. Peel back the A pillar trim and check the roof rail loom for pinch damage, screw punctures and crushed sections
  4. Clear the code after reseating and see whether it stays away, since a partly mated connector is a frequent cause
  5. Fit the manufacturer approved load tool in place of the curtain module and retest to separate harness from module
  6. Repair or renew the damaged harness section and clip it clear of trim fixings and sharp roof rail edges
  7. Replace the curtain airbag with the correct part number if the load tool proves the wiring good, then clear the memory and confirm the lamp goes out
