What does it mean?
B1442 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Curtain air bag module (RH) (squib) system fault ground circuit (short-circuited to ground) .
Symptoms
- Airbag warning lamp permanently on with the right curtain airbag switched off
- Curtain will not deploy in a side impact or rollover
- Fault appears directly after headliner, pillar trim, glass or roof accessory work
- Code is current on every ignition cycle and cannot be erased
- Other codes from circuits sharing the roof rail loom may set at the same time
Likely causes
- Roof rail loom pierced by a trim screw or a self tapping fastener used for a grab handle or accessory
- Harness crushed between the headliner and the roof rail when the headliner was refitted
- Insulation rubbed through where the loom passes a sharp pillar flange
- Water running down the A pillar corroding a terminal until it leaks to the connector shell or body
- Internal short to the metal housing inside the curtain airbag unit
- Damaged connector body letting a pin contact its mounting clip
- Restraint control module output stage failure
How to fix it
- De-energise the system by switching off, disconnecting the battery and waiting the specified reserve discharge time
- Lower the headliner edge and inspect the full roof rail loom for screw punctures, crush marks and rubbed through insulation
- Pay particular attention to any point where a fastener was driven in for a grab handle, visor or aftermarket accessory
- Check for water tracking down the A pillar and cure the leak before making any electrical repair
- Unplug the curtain airbag, fit the approved load tool and check whether the short to ground is still present in the harness
- Repair or renew the damaged section and reroute it into its original clips away from flanges and fixings
- Replace the curtain airbag unit only if the load tool proves the wiring is clean, then clear the memory and confirm the lamp goes out
