Can I keep driving?

Usually drivable, but get it diagnosed without delay.

First step

Locate the contact point between the squib line and the power feed.

What does it mean?

B1453 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Curtain Air bag Module (LH) (Squib) System (Shorted to Squib Circuit Power Supply) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag/SRS warning lamp on and cannot be cleared
  • Left curtain airbag is disabled and will not deploy
  • Fault very often follows headliner, pillar trim, windscreen or accessory installation work
  • Other circuits in the same loom, such as interior or courtesy lamp feeds, may blow a fuse
  • Code returns straight away after being erased

Likely causes

  • Squib harness chafed against a powered wire behind the pillar trim or along the roof rail
  • Aftermarket wiring for roof lamps, alarms, cameras or audio tapped into or routed through the SRS loom
  • Water running down the pillar into the connector and bridging the squib pin to a live pin
  • Terminal pushed out of the connector body and touching the vehicle structure or a live terminal
  • Trim fastener or screw driven through the loom during a repair
  • Internal fault in the curtain airbag module or in the control unit deployment driver

How to fix it

  1. Note the stored SRS codes and whether they are current, then power down the system: ignition off, battery disconnected, prescribed wait observed
  2. Disconnect the curtain module and inspect the pillar connector for water tracks, corrosion, pushed-out terminals and melted insulation
  3. With the battery reconnected, check the harness side of the squib circuit for any voltage; there should be none
  4. Note whether the voltage is present only with the ignition or the lights on, which identifies the feeding circuit
  5. Remove pillar and headliner trim along the loom route and look for chafe against a powered wire, a screw through the loom or non-factory splices
  6. Remove any added wiring from the SRS loom, repair the damaged section and re-route it clear of live wires
  7. Fit the approved SRS load tool in place of the curtain module to confirm whether the module itself is at fault
  8. Clear the codes, cycle the ignition and verify the warning lamp completes its check and stays off
