What does it mean?

B1538 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Seat belt switch (RH) circuit (ground side) shorted (for common terminal) .

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning lamp on
  • Right belt reminder locked in one state and unresponsive to the buckle
  • Multiple right belt switch codes stored together, since both contacts share this leg
  • Code returns immediately after clearing
  • Right seat pretensioner staging disabled

Likely causes

  • Common wire worn through onto the seat frame, floor pan or a rail bracket
  • Loom crushed under the seat mounting when the seat was refitted
  • Terminal pushed out of the under-seat connector and lying on bare metal
  • Corrosion or standing moisture in the connector bridging the common pin to the shell
  • Internal short in the buckle where the shared return touches the switch housing
  • Old repair where the loom was taped straight onto a sharp metal edge

How to fix it

  1. Clear the code and recheck to confirm the short is live rather than stored history
  2. Unplug the buckle and measure the common wire to ground with the connector separated
  3. Inspect the loom along the rails and seat pan for worn insulation and crushing under the seat mounts
  4. Check the connector for water, corrosion and a terminal resting against metal
  5. Remove items stored under the seat that press the loom onto the floor pan
  6. Repair the grounded wire with correct terminals and secure it away from sharp edges
  7. Replace the right buckle assembly if the short is inside it, then clear and verify normal operation
