What does it mean?

B1881 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger-Side Pre-Tensioner Seat Belt Circuit Resistance High .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on and stays on with the engine running
  • Passenger belt pretensioner is not armed and will not tighten in an impact
  • Warning may come and go as the passenger seat is adjusted
  • Restraint system message on the information display where fitted
  • Passenger air bag status indicator may behave abnormally alongside this fault

Likely causes

  • Under seat restraint connector loose, half seated or with an unlocked retaining clip
  • Fretting corrosion on the connector pins after moisture reached the passenger footwell
  • Harness pulled or broken by repeated seat travel along the rails
  • Internal open in the pretensioner igniter inside the belt assembly
  • Terminal spread or pushed back after the connector was probed or forced
  • Damage caused during child seat anchor, seat cover or floor mat installation
  • Restraint control module connector or output stage fault

How to fix it

  1. Follow the air bag safety procedure fully before touching any restraint connector
  2. Read the codes and freeze frame, then check whether the fault is current or only stored in history
  3. Unlatch the under seat connector and inspect for a half seated housing, unlocked clip, green corrosion or bent terminals
  4. Clean, reseat and lock the connector, clear the code and retest before replacing any part
  5. Slide the passenger seat fully forward and back while monitoring the system to catch an intermittent break in the harness
  6. Connect the manufacturer approved test load in place of the pretensioner: if the code clears, the belt assembly is open, if it stays, the fault is in the wiring or module
  7. Consider the restraint control module only after the wiring and pretensioner have both been verified
