First step

Check battery state of charge and charging voltage first, because a weak battery alone can trigger position performance faults

What does it mean?

B1883 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Position Sensor 1 Circuit Performance .

Symptoms

  • Power liftgate stops part way, reverses or refuses to move at all
  • The system beeps and the gate must be opened and closed by hand
  • Gate stops at a different height each time, or does not reach the latch
  • Opening or closing is unusually slow or jerky
  • Function returns temporarily after a battery disconnect, then fails again

Likely causes

  • Worn or contaminated liftgate position sensor inside the spindle drive or strut
  • Worn gears or a slipping clutch in the spindle drive so the gate moves without a matching sensor count
  • Travel limits never relearned after a strut, motor, latch or module replacement
  • Broken or intermittent conductor in the harness that flexes at the liftgate hinge conduit
  • Corroded connector at the strut or behind the trim, often after a rear seal leak
  • Binding hinges, a frozen weather seal or a stiff gas strut making the gate move slower than commanded
  • Weak battery or low system voltage causing erratic motor speed and sensor readings

How to fix it

  1. Check battery state of charge and charging voltage first, because a weak battery alone can trigger position performance faults
  2. Operate the gate manually and feel for binding hinges, a dragging seal or a tired gas strut before blaming electronics
  3. Read the module codes and watch the position sensor value in live data while moving the gate slowly by hand, looking for dropouts or a flat spot
  4. Flex the harness in the hinge conduit while monitoring the signal to expose a broken conductor
  5. Inspect the strut and module connectors for corrosion and water and dry them out
  6. Carry out the liftgate travel relearn or initialisation procedure, which is required after any related repair
  7. Treat the liftgate control module as the final step once wiring, sensor and mechanism have all been verified
