What does it mean?

B1884 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Passenger Air Bag Deactivation (PAD) Indicator Circuit Open Or Short To Body Ground .

Symptoms

  • The PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicator never illuminates, including during the key on bulb check
  • The driver cannot tell whether the passenger air bag is currently enabled or disabled
  • Air bag warning lamp is also on in most cases
  • Indicator may flicker or light only in one state
  • Passenger restraint may be inhibited until the indicator circuit is repaired

Likely causes

  • Burnt out bulb or failed LED in the PAD indicator, which sits in the centre console, overhead console or dash top depending on the vehicle
  • Open circuit in the wire between the restraint control module and the indicator
  • Connector at the indicator not fully seated, or its terminals corroded
  • Indicator drive wire chafed against a bracket and shorted to ground
  • Water damage in the console after a drink spill or a leaking windscreen
  • Faulty PAD indicator module or its internal driver
  • Restraint control module output stage failure

How to fix it

  1. Follow the air bag safety procedure before removing any trim or unplugging restraint connectors
  2. Watch the indicator during the key on self test and note whether it is dead, stuck on or stuck off
  3. Remove the indicator and inspect the bulb or LED, its socket and its connector for burnt contacts and corrosion
  4. Command the indicator on and off with the scan tool bidirectional test to separate a module fault from a lamp circuit fault
  5. Check continuity of the control wire from the module connector to the indicator, then check the same wire for a short to ground with both ends disconnected
  6. Inspect the console area for spilled liquid and dry and clean any affected connector
  7. Repair the wiring or fit a new indicator assembly, and treat the restraint control module as the last resort
