First step

Read the module codes and note which pinch sensor circuit is reported, since most gates have one per side

What does it mean?

B1888 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Power Liftgate Pinch Sensor 1 Circuit Low .

Symptoms

  • Power liftgate refuses to operate and must be used manually
  • Gate reverses immediately after it starts to close, as if something were trapped
  • System beeps repeatedly when the close button or handle is used
  • Fault may be worse after rain or a car wash
  • Hands free or foot activated opening stops working while the code is present

Likely causes

  • Pinch sensor strip cut, crushed or pierced along the edge of the liftgate opening
  • Water inside the strip terminator or its connector shorting the signal to ground
  • Lead chafed where it flexes at the liftgate hinge or grommet
  • Corroded connector at the strip after a rear seal or tail lamp gasket leak
  • Terminating resistor failed short or the wrong resistor fitted after a repair
  • Signal wire shorted to ground where the harness passes a bracket
  • Liftgate control module input circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Read the module codes and note which pinch sensor circuit is reported, since most gates have one per side
  2. Inspect the full length of the rubber pinch strip for cuts, crush marks, staples or trim clips driven through it
  3. Unplug the strip and measure its end to end resistance and its resistance to ground, comparing with the opposite side strip
  4. Check for water in the connector and the strip terminator, dry them and reassess
  5. Flex the lead at the hinge and grommet while monitoring the circuit to catch an intermittent short
  6. Verify the terminating resistor value against specification, especially if the gate has been repaired before
  7. Consider the liftgate control module only when the strip and harness both test correctly
