What does it mean?

B1885 is a Body (airbags, seat belts, body electronics) fault code. It indicates: Driver-Side Pre-Tensioner Seat Belt Circuit Resistance Low .

Symptoms

  • Air bag warning lamp on continuously and the restraint system disabled
  • Driver belt pretensioner will not fire in a collision
  • Fault often follows seat removal, interior cleaning or water on the floor
  • Code returns immediately after clearing when the short is hard rather than intermittent
  • No effect on engine performance, the complaint is a permanent safety warning

Likely causes

  • Insulation worn through where the two firing wires cross a sharp edge under the seat, letting them touch each other
  • Moisture and corrosion inside the under seat connector bridging the two pins
  • Shorting bar in the connector damaged so it stays closed even when mated
  • Internal short in the pretensioner igniter inside the belt assembly
  • Harness crushed by a seat rail or mounting bolt, deforming both conductors together
  • Repair splice made with the wrong terminals, leaving strands touching
  • Restraint control module measuring circuit fault

How to fix it

  1. Complete the air bag safety procedure: ignition off, battery disconnected, prescribed stand time observed
  2. Read and record the codes and freeze frame, then check whether the fault is permanent or intermittent
  3. Disconnect the pretensioner and measure between the two harness wires; a low or zero reading with the module also disconnected proves the short is in the wiring
  4. Inspect the under seat connector for moisture, corrosion and a shorting bar that is not releasing when the connector is mated
  5. Follow the harness along the seat rails and floor looking for crushed or chafed sections where both wires are damaged together
  6. Check any previous repair splice and redo it with the specified terminals and proper insulation
  7. Only after wiring and pretensioner are verified should the restraint control module be replaced
